Luxembourg Pavilion OSAKA EXPO 2025

Texts

This pavilion was designed with a Luxembourg-based architect Steinmetzdemeyer for Expo 2025 Osaka, bringing together structural lightness, reusability, and a scenographical experience that represents the heart of Luxembourg.
A single suspension membrane gently wraps thirteen boxes of varying sizes, creating spatial uniformity and visual identity. The 3-dimensional equilibrium including the steel structure and foundation is found through a graphical method of form-finding, achieving formal complexity with visual simplicity.
The high-strength PVC membrane, rarely used in Japan, has a low environmental footprint in production and is light enough to handle easily on site despite its high strength. The principle of circular economy is enacted through the reuse of all major components after the exposition closes: the membrane, the plywood facades, the steelwork, the precast foundation blocks, each finding a new life, closing the loop.
